Classical piano lessons in Paris
My first training was classical, at the Conservatoire de Genève. In lessons I try to keep three things connected: the quality of sound, the understanding of the score, and the physical gesture that makes both possible.
Technique starts from the music
Articulation, independence, movement, pedalling and balance between voices are addressed through real musical problems. Technical exercises have their place, but they serve an identified need rather than the same mechanical programme for every student.
Reading with greater fluency
Sight-reading is a skill in its own right: looking ahead, recognising intervals and patterns, keeping the pulse and learning not to stop at every mistake. The goal is to move beyond note-by-note reading.
Understanding what you interpret
A phrase becomes clearer when you hear its direction, harmonic tension and place in the form. Analysis is therefore used in a practical way, to support phrasing, memory and interpretation.
Classical training can also open towards improvisation
For students who are interested, ear training and harmony can complement the classical repertoire and create a less exclusively visual relationship with music. See also Jazz & improvisation.
